In October 2008, the European Omnis developer
conference, EurOmnis,
took place in the Netherlands, and by all accounts
was a great success for all the 80 or so developers
there to share and gain Omnis knowledge. It was
the second year the organisers followed the 'The
Next Generation' banner whereby groups of no more
than 6 developers explored a technical topic in
detail -- this format has proven itself to be
a winning formula with developers and makes a
great conference and intense learning experience
(see some pics). We were
delighted to speak at the conference, and unveiled
our plans for the next major release of Omnis
Studio version 5 ("Studio 5").
The main theme for Studio 5 is 'Extending Omnis
to New Platforms and New Markets':
New
Platforms: support for Smartphones
and other mobile devices
New
Markets: full support for Unicode means
you can deploy in any language to virtually any
market place in the world
Anticipated Studio 5
Features at a glance:
Omnis
Mobile Client for Windows Mobile® Professional
version 5.0, 6.0, 6.1 based devices
Unicode
support for all platforms and all supported server
databases; note Studio 5 will be a Unicode only
release, but the SDK will be available for Windows,
Linux, & Mac OS X
Remote
form controls are enhanced with correct platform
look-and-feel for web browsers and mobile devices,
plus new Remote menus
Other
enhancements include new VCS options, a Windows
Registry admin tool, a new configurable Web Server plug-in, the ability to collect method performance data, and many other smaller enhancements
Support for mobile devices
in Omnis Studio may help developers to:
Retain
customers by adding value to your existing applications,
extending the life of your application
Gain
new customers in new markets as the demand for
mobile business applications increases
Create
entirely new applications for mobile
Further
open up new markets with Unicode

The all new Omnis Mobile
Client:
A new
version of the Omnis Web Client plug-in
Displays
a remote form on the mobile device
The
Omnis Mobile Client runs inside a small, stand-alone
program which is downloaded to the mobile device
along with the client; it does not run inside
the mobile web browser
The
remote form is configured via a separate XML file,
not an HTML file
Connects
to your application and databases via the Omnis
Server as in previous versions
Remote forms for Mobile
devices:
A single
remote form can have different layouts for desktop
and mobile
Only
one set of methods for all fields and the form
itself
Otherwise,
the same as designing remote forms in previous
versions
New
Remote menus can be added to forms, which on Windows
Mobile appear in the menubar on the device
Testing
the new Mobile forms on the device is as easy
as pressing Ctrl-T!
The new Mobile and Unicode support in Omnis Studio
5 mean that you can deploy your applications to:
All
platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux)
All
clients (Desktop, LAN, Web, Mobile)
All
leading databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle,
Sybase, DB2, ODBC and JDBC)
All
technologies (.NET, Web Services, Java, XML, and
more via plug-ins)
All
markets (Mobilise and Localise your apps and reach
virtually any market, anywhere in the world)
