Aug 2006
Omnis Developers Conference

At the end of August 2006, the Omnis community will assemble at OmnisCentral Americas 2006, a technical conference organised by Omnis developers, for developers. The organisers (Clifford Ilkay & David Ferri) have just announced the complete program of events, which has some of the top names in the Omnis world, and they've added some major new sponsors. VDA of the Netherlands and A & L from Germany have stepped forward with very generous sponsorship, and both companies will provide speakers.

Sessions will range from Omnis 7 to Studio conversion, the Web, integration with other technologies and even sessions about the native Omnis database. Topics include Studio Training with David Swain (our tech newsletter author), Agile Web Development Techniques with Clifford Ilkay, Omnis Studio and Web Services with Mark Phillips and Vik Shah co-presenting, and with Bob Mitchell (RD UK Omnis Engineering manager) 'The Mitford House Chronicles', a lighter look at the manor house where in the UK Omnis engineering is based. Also attending from RD UK is Bob Whiting, head of Technical Support and QA. So get your Omnis questions ready!

Farewell and Thanks to Gwyneth Gibbs

After many years in which she played an outstanding role in the development of Omnis and especially in the formation of the European operations for Blyth/ Omnis Software / Raining Data, we have to let Gwyneth Gibbs go into her well deserved retirement on 31st July 2006. Gwyneth says Goodbye to all friends of Omnis:

Everyone,

This is to let you know that after nearly 12 years with Blyth / Omnis / Raining Data, I have decided it's time to take things easier, and so I am stopping work at the end of July 2006. We are also moving house, so please forgive me for passing this news on by email; things are rather hectic at the moment, as I am sure you can imagine...

It's been an interesting 12 years; I have made some real friends among the Omnis community and of course I'll miss lots of things about not being involved any more. However, it's nice to leave feeling confident that the Omnis team in Mitford House and in Germany will continue to look after both you, the customers, and the Omnis products.

Thanks and best wishes to all of you. Regards
Gwyneth

Gwyneth joined Blyth Software, as it was then, in 1994. After her studies in mathematics and astronomy in London,

she performed various roles with several different scientific and technical organisations in the UK. When she started with Blyth, Gwyneth was responsible for the Omnis product development in Europe and from 1998 was head of worldwide product development. At the end of 1998 she became President of Omnis Software Corp. After our merge with Pick Systems in 2000, Gwyneth became Vice President Europe of the new Raining Data Corp.

During her time with our company, Gwyneth has greatly influenced the development of Omnis, including the development and launch of Omnis Studio, the extension of its cross platform capability with the introduction of the Linux and Solaris versions, as well as the unique Omnis Web Client technology, to name just a few of the highlights.

Many of you will have had the chance to get to know Gwyneth in person, whether it was at an Omnis Developer conference or at a Raining Data event. We are sure that you have will have been impressed, not only by her business and technical competence but especially her winning character and warm-hearted personality. You will probably join us in saying how much we will miss her in the future. We are glad, however, that Bob Mitchell will continue his great job in charge of Omnis Engineering and that Bob Whiting will continue as head of QA and Support as well as taking on extra responsibilities. Therefore the personal continuity has been taken care of accordingly.

We have decided not to fill Gwyneth's position as VP Europe in the same form again. Instead the three European subsidiaries shall report directly to the Raining Data headquarters in the US.

We wish Gwyneth and her husband a relaxed and interesting time and, besides their new house and many exciting travels, hope that they will be able to enjoy all the things which they never had time for during their working lives. And we thank Gwyneth for her understanding in many job-related and personal matters, for the many things we have learned from her and for everything she did to make Omnis Studio as strong and as powerful as it is today!

See Omnis in action on the Web!
Omnis Webinars

We are delighted to announce a brand new series of web-based seminars or webinars. These will begin at the end of August and continue for several weeks. The webinars feature a number of different topics and are designed to help you find out and learn more about Omnis Studio, whatever your level of Omnis knowledge - so there will be seminar topics for beginners, including those users looking at Omnis for the first time, as well as experienced Omnis developers. The webinars will be hosted on Webex, a popular platform for web-based seminars, and will be available in English and German language - this means that the same topic will be available in English and German on the same day, but at a different time (note all webinar times are in Mid-European Time (MEZ) equivalent to GMT +2:00 hours). You can attend as many of the webinars as you like, and of course they are all totally free-of-charge.

We hope that we have assembled an interesting selection of topics, to cater for all levels of Omnis knowledge, from complete beginners to those developers with many years experience of working with Omnis. If you are evaluating Omnis Studio, you should think about attending the first webinar:

• Introduction to Omnis Studio
- This webinar is for people without Omnis knowledge. It provides an overview of the power of Omnis Studio and introduces the development of web and client/server applications using Omnis. We will demonstrate in practice how you can develop a functional application and integrate it with a database within a few minutes.

Complete beginners and those evaluating Omnis may find the following webinar topics interesting, but they are primarily designed to extend your knowledge of Omnis development techniques and show the range of functionality available in Omnis.

• Migration made easy - This webinar will show you how you can use Omnis Studio to create an application on one platform (Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X) and deploy it on any platform, without re-compiling or modification.

• Web solutions for SAP
- This webinar shows you how to access your SAP(TM) data from the desktop or via the web; it's easy to build an interface to your SAP applications using Omnis Studio for SAP Solutions (TM)

• Rich Internet Applications (RIA) - See how easy it is to build fully functional web applications using Omnis Studio and the Omnis web client. This webinar will take you beyond simple HTML apps, and show you how to deliver powerful business solutions on the web.

• Data migration with Omnis - You can access all the most popular databases in Omnis Studio including Oracle, Sybase, DB2, and MySQL. Omnis lets you access data on one DB and transfer to another using drag and drop; this webinar will show you how.

• SOA - Omnis Web Services quick and easy - This webinar will show how you extend Omnis including the use of Java, C++ and COM/DCOM, as well as Web Services. In the new Omnis Studio 4.2 you can access Web Services or create your own.

Omnis Roadshow with Sybase iAnywhere
Omnis and Sybase iAnywhere

We are planning to hold a roadshow together with the database vendor iAnywhere Solutions in five different cities in Germany in September. This roadshow is held under the banner "Efficient solution development with Omnis Studio & SQL Anywhere" and is aimed at anybody in the German speaking area, especially those developers who create business solutions requiring a modern server database. Please note that the seminars will be held in German language.

SQL Anywhere of iAnywhere Solutions is a database and synchronisation tool and fits ideally with Omnis Studio, particularly as SQL Anywhere is cross platform and runs on all operating systems supported by Omnis. The performance, reliability and security of SQL Anywhere fulfils the requirements for a professional data management system and makes it an inexpensive alternative in the database market.

Together with iAnywhere Solutions, we will show in live presentations how you can develop flexible and powerful database-driven business applications for Windows, Linux, Solaris and Max OS/X systems with little expenditure of time. The following dates and locations are available:

5th Sept 2006, 10–16h Hamburg
6th Sept 2006, 10–16h Düsseldorf
7th Sept 2006, 10–16h Frankfurt
12th Sept 2006, 10–16h Herrenberg
13th Sept 2006, 10–16h Munich

You can register for these events at: www.ianywhere.com/rainingdata_seminar, or you can email ge_sales@omnis.net for further information.
