Support for the new 'Windows phone' in Omnis Studio 5...

On September 18 we announced the general availability of Omnis Studio 5, which is now available to download from this web site. This new release introduced the groundbreaking new Omnis Mobile Client which allows developers to create applications for the growing range of Windows Mobile-based devices including Smartphones, PDAs, tablet PCs and other mobile devices. And since the release of Studio 5, Microsoft has announced a major new release of its Windows Mobile software, version 6.5, which Studio 5 supports for mobile application development*. The new release from Microsoft also sees the software vendor branding any phone carrying the new software as a Windows Phone in a major push to increase its market share. Most of the major phone manufacturers (including HTC, Samsung, LG, Toshiba) and most network carriers are releasing Windows phones in the run up to the Holiday season, so it's a good time to start developing mobile applications in Studio 5 for your customers and entirely new markets.

Regarding the Studio 5 release, apart from the Windows phone support, we packed in many other features and enhancements. Not least the enhanced Localization features and full Unicode compatibility, which provide support for thousands of languages allowing you to reach new customers in SMEs, corporations, public and technical institutions, as well as emerging markets throughout the world. Other features in Omnis Studio 5 include brand new interactive GUI components (Accordion & FishEye), extensions to the Omnis component interface to allow animation and transparency in third-party components, important updates in the Omnis VCS for developer teams, context menus for web and mobile forms, and method performance monitoring. We also announced two new configurations for the Omnis Studio SDK, namely the Standard Edition and the Professional Edition. The Standard is a free of charge SDK that allows direct access to the MySQL or PostgreSQL database, while the Professional Edition (which replaces the Web Edition) includes all the tools you need for web and mobile application development, plus all the DAMs for all leading databases, and the VCS. Omnis Studio 5 is available for download from this website here and DVD media will be available soon via your local sales office. You can read the full press release here

* The Omnis Mobile Client runs on version 5.0, 6.0, 6.1, and 6.5 of the Windows Mobile OS.

Omnis 30th Celebration @ EurOmnis

Omnis is celebrating its 30th birthday this year, with the main celebration taking place at this year's Euromnis conference in October. The company that created Omnis, Blyth Computers (which became Omnis Software), was founded by Paul Wright in 1979, in a small village near the River Blyth in the East of England (to this day the main Omnis development centre, Mitford House, is located only a few miles from where the company was started). The company began as a computer retailer, but soon after its foundation David Seaman was recruited to write software for farmers and other small businesses in the area. This proved so successful the software David created was packaged and sold as the first OMNIS products. The first version of Omnis was available for Apple II, then support for the ground-breaking Apple Macintosh was added, and then came support for IBM PCs and compatibles: since that time Omnis has remained truly cross-platform, supporting all the most recent versions of Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, right up to Omnis Studio 5 released in September this year.

EurOmnis 2009
EurOmnis is also celebrating this year, being its 10th anniversary conference, so this year's conference will be a very special occasion. We will be showing many of the new features in Omnis Studio 5 at the conference, including Windows Mobile and iPhone development, Unicode and Localization, and much more. And there'll be some special presentations about Omnis and Mitford House, and the conference will be joined by some very special guests – cornerstones of the Omnis community!

And we must thank Fred Brinkman for allowing us to host the Omnis 30th celebration at this year's EurOmnis conference. For more info about the conference and to see the full program of technical sessions, go to: www.euromnis.com
