Omnis Studio 4.3.1 is here...

Leopard and VistaOmnis Studio 4.3.1 is the latest version of Omnis Studio. It contains improvements in the appearance and behavior of Omnis under Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (see below), together with several other smaller enhancements for all platforms, which includes Vista since the release of Studio 4.3.

Window toolbars on Mac OS X are now displayed as part of the window title bar, while Tab panes and Group boxes have the standard Mac OS X appearance

The system focus for Radio buttons, Check boxes and standard Pushbuttons is improved on Mac OS X, as well as the appearance of the Transbutton control

The appearance of several list types is improved under Mac OS X; alternating colors are displayed in the background of list boxes and headed lists, while icon arrays look better on Mac OS X

All built-in and custom messages, including OK messages, Working messages, and Prompt for input messages, are displayed as sheet windows on Mac OS X; in addition, you can control the transparency of custom sheet windows

Omnispic contains some new and improved icons, including new sizes (32x32) for some icons that were not previously supplied

And in the IDE, the Component Store now opens in small icons with text mode under Mac OS X, while component groups can be selected from the toolbar, and method lists in the Method Editor are lengthened to accommodate more method names, making coding easier

Plus there are several minor enhancements in the PostgreSQL DAM including support for PostgreSQL 8.3 data types, and there is a new Universal Binary edition of the Mac OS X Oracle DAM

This release will convert a library created with any previous version of Omnis Studio, including Studio 4.1, 4.2, and all previous revisions of Studio 4.3

Omnis developer list gets new home, and Euro conference...

New home for Omnis developers  As with any software development tool, you would expect there to be a thriving developer community and Omnis is no exception. The real focus of the Omnis developer community is an email list, which the community runs itself for all Omnis developers old and new. Until recently the list was hosted and maintained by keen Omnis advocates David Ferri and Clifford Ilkay, but they have handed over the reins to another equally willing and able bunch of Omnis developers. The new mailing lists are provided (in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish) and available at: www.omnis-dev.com, where you can sign-up and browse the archive, which has over 140,000 messages going back to 1995, a very useful resource.

EurOmnis

European Developer Conference
Also a focus for Omnis developers are the annual conferences, held at various times and in various continents around the world. In October this year, it's the turn of EurOmnis, which is once again at the Parkhotel Valkenburg, in The Netherlands and is organised by Fred Brinkman, long-time Omnis developer and organiser of many past conferences.

The conference program is taking shape and includes a complete Studio 101 training course taught by respected Omnis trainer and writer David Swain, and many other familiar faces from the Omnis world including: Raymond Tress, Sten-Erik Björling, Michael Monschau, Kelly Burgess, Geir Fjaerli, and Doug Kuyvenhoven. We will also be sending people to talk about the current and future developments in Omnis. Full details about the program and conference fees (there is an early bird rate which is available until 31 May) are here: www.euromnis.org

Omnis Italy conference & Linux trade show...

Omnis Italian Developer Conference 2008

Software Products Italia (SPI) are the Omnis representative and distributor in Italy. They are holding a one-day conference for Italian Omnis developers on Wednesday 14th May, 2008, at the Torrazzetta hotel near Pavia in the Lombardy region. This is a great opportunity for all developers in Italy and other parts of Europe to meet up face-to-face, learn about all the latest techniques in Omnis, and to meet many Omnis product experts, including those from Raining Data. Bob Mitchell and Bob Whiting, from Raining Data UK (Omnis' development centre) will attend, introducing Unicode and .NET integration in Omnis Studio 4.3, and they will give a preview of the features in the next major release of Omnis.

Torrazzetta

Several other well-known faces in the Omnis community will be at the Torrazzetta including Emanuele Grosso from Newlog Consulting, and Stefano Querzè of Bremen Software, as well as Michel Sutter from Apple Europe. More details about the conference and how to register are on www.omnis.it

LinuxTag 2008

Raining Data Germany are pleased to announce that they will be attending LinuxTag, described as "Europe's leading exhibition on Linux and Open Source", which takes place from May 28 - 31, 2008 at Berlin's 'Radio Tower' exhibition centre (Messezentrum unter dem Funkturm). The trade show and conference attracts over 10,000 developers and IT specialists from the open source and corporate IT community, and provides a showcase for all Linux-based and open source projects and associated products.

Omnis is one of only a few products to offer a true cross-platform .IDE for creating enterprise and web applications, and we, of course, will be showing the latest version of Omnis Studio running under Linux at LinuxTag. There are now many developers and public bodies in Europe using Omnis for Linux to develop successful applications, and we're sure this will continue to grow - one clear advantage with Omnis is that you can create an application under Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux and deploy it under any of these, either on the client or server. More info about the show here: www.linuxtag.org

Now we are all tigers!

The observant amongst you will have noticed that we (Raining Data) have changed our corporate name to TigerLogic. The change occurred on April 18th alongside the release of a brand new product called ChunkIt!, a web browser plug-in designed to enhance web searches. So our corporate owner is now known as the TigerLogic Corporation, our stock symbol has changed from RDTA to TIGR, and we unveiled a brand new company logo which you'll see appearing on all our marketing collateral and website as we work through the changes.

Chunk Omnis...

As far as the Omnis product is concerned, there is no change at all - we will continue to deliver the same leading-edge development tools and world-class technical support as before. Proof of this strategy is the imminent release of Omnis Studio 4.3.1, the plans we have for the next major release of Omnis Studio, and our continued support for the whole world-wide Omnis community via our regional distributors and developer-organised conferences. For further details about the name change, and ChunkIt! itself, please see the company FAQ here.
